CBAM: the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
With Regulation (EU) 2023/956, the European Union has introduced the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This new regulation imposes a price on greenhouse gas emissions embedded in certain types of industrial products imported into the EU
During the transitional phase, importers must collect emission data from non-EU producers and report quarterly on the “embedded emissions” of their imports.
From 2026, importers will be required to declare annually the quantity of goods subject to CBAM imported during the previous calendar year, as well as the data on embedded carbon dioxide emissions, and to purchase a corresponding number of CBAM certificates.
